Mission

The New York Academy of Medicine advances the health of people in cities. An independent organization since 1847, NYAM addresses the health challenges facing the world's urban populations through interdisciplinary approaches to policy leadership, education, community engagement and innovative research.

Drawing on the expertise of diverse partners worldwide and more than 2,000 elected Fellows from across the professions, our current priorities are

  • To create environments in cities that support healthy aging
  • To strengthen systems that prevent disease and promote the public's health
  • To implement interventions that eliminate health disparities

Summary and Description

Age-friendly New York City (www.agefriendlynyc) is a collaborative effort to respond to and benefit from the needs of older new Yorkers. Part of this effort includes the creation of Aging Improvement Districts. Through these Districts, the concerns and suggestions of older adults in a specific neighborhood are brought together with the leaders and resources of local businesses, non-profit organizations, city officials, cultural, educational and religious institutions to think strategically to make no and low-cost improvements. 2-3 interns are needed to:

Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct community consultations with older adults and community leaders in different neighborhoods to identify solutions to local problems (e.g. consultations with older adults in East Harlem around the 125th St. and Lexington Ave. intersection, help Dromm and Vacca’s office with their consultations)
• Conduct simple surveys and input and analyze the data collected
• Reach out to cultural institutions to collect best practices in engaging and including older adults and research existing literature on the topic
• Design and make presentations to groups of older adults about age-friendly resources available to them (e.g. the cultural guides, college link, parks department seniors section, aging improvement districts, grocery guides)
• Support the Age-friendly NYC Commission by creating new materials and organizing an archive of existing materials (trying to find a way to make organizing our photos and files sound more interesting)
