Summary and Description

The NYAM Center for the History of Medicine and Public Health is NYAM’s newest Center, and is looking for a dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented Associate Director, who will act as Head of Library Services. We are looking for an experienced library professional with excellent technical knowledge and a record of successful grant proposal authorship, combined with a high level of interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to lead effective teams and projects.

The incumbent will play a key role in developing the strategic direction of the Center, and act as its Head in the absence of the Director. The Center is made up of the main Library, Rare Book and Historical Collections and Conservation Laboratory.  The Associate Director will provide leadership and management for the Center’s library staff and resources, including collections management. An immediate focus of the Center is on developing its digital resources, and the Associate Director will play a leadership role in seeking funding for, and delivering, targeted digitization programs. The Associate Director will work closely with colleagues within the Center and across NYAM to identify funding opportunities and outreach activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Management of Library team, and oversight of all library budgets, programs, services, policies, and procedures
• Strategic planning for Center development
• Preparation of grant proposals and other funding requests
• Oversight of all aspects of ILS maintenance and development
• Development and management of digital resources
• Collections management
• Leadership of grey literature project and corporate services
• Coordination of outreach and educational activities
• Perform as Acting Director for the Center in the absence of the Director

Qualifications

• MLS from an accredited ALA program
• AHIP credentials

Experience

• Demonstrated leadership experience with library operations and management within a research library; medical, health sciences or historical collections experience preferred
• Record of successful grant proposal authorship
• Demonstrated knowledge of issues relating to care of historical collections
• Strong HR management skills
• Ability to create productive working relationships
• Strong creative and analytical skills with excellent problem-solving ability and resourcefulness
• Excellent technical, written and verbal communication skills
• Project management experience, especially relating to digitization
