Mission

The New York Academy of Medicine advances the health of people in cities. An independent organization since 1847, NYAM addresses the health challenges facing the world's urban populations through interdisciplinary approaches to policy leadership, education, community engagement and innovative research.

Drawing on the expertise of diverse partners worldwide and more than 2,000 elected Fellows from across the professions, our current priorities are

  • To create environments in cities that support healthy aging
  • To strengthen systems that prevent disease and promote the public's health
  • To implement interventions that eliminate health disparities

Summary and Description

The Intern will provide project support and assist in tasks related to the  Division of Health Policy’s work in health disparities, including the division’s drug policy agenda. The New York Academy of Medicine has been working to develop a blueprint for a “Public Health Approach to Drug Policy” - a roadmap for a more coordinated, multi-sectoral approach to policies relating to illicit drug use and prescription drugs that seeks to improve the health outcomes of individuals and communities at the city and state level.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Developing a summary table of recent related legislation introduced at the state and city level
• Conducting literature reviews and other research on 1-3 issues to inform policy interventions identified by drug policy blueprint
• Assist in development of 2-3 policy and communication materials (concept papers, memos, fact sheets, etc.) articulating different aspects of the drug policy agenda
• Attend community events, meetings, panels, etc. in New York City and take notes
• Assist in staffing and coordinating of meetings and events

Qualifications

Seeking committed and responsible undergraduate or graduate student. Significant interest in public health and the health policy issues facing vulnerable populations. Commitment and interest in political and social change. Verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational and literature review skills. Familiarity with PubMed and/or other research databases.

Experience

College degree required.
