Summary and Description

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, and working closely with Directors of Program Units and other leadership at NYAM the Manager is responsible for setting non-governmental foundation fund raising goals and developing related grant development strategies.  The Manager will be charged with managing existing relationships as well as cultivating and developing a broader prospect “pipeline”.   The Manager should also have grant writing expertise, especially in formulating larger, more complex grants.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serves as primary liaison with current and potential new foundation and corporate foundation funders as appropriate in consultation with Program Directors and President’s Office; initiates and manages relationships with foundation and corporate foundation  staff, engaging  the  President, Board of Trustees, and/or other Senior Management involvement as needed.

2. Collaborates with Program Directors or designated staff to prepare each Unit’s foundation and corporate grants plan and assists them creating a plan that accurately reflects the intentions of the unit and encourages collaboration, as appropriate across units.

3. Grant Seeking:
a. Works with colleagues throughout the organization to gather information and data for proposals and reports.
b. Researches and recommends new potential funding partners by preparing summary information on funding opportunities to be reviewed periodically at Management Committee meetings; for potential grants requiring more timely review, potential grants will be forwarded directly to each unit director.
c. Solicits grants in support of general operating funds.
d. Staffs foundation and corporate foundation relations cultivation activities, including tours, cultivation visits, meetings, events, and special projects as necessary.
e. Shares knowledge about funding priorities and strategies of foundation and corporate funders and grant-making institutions, especially those focused on urban health, prevention, healthy aging and eliminating health disparities. Maintains an up-to-date master list of the targets for funding opportunities and the plans of each unit.

4. Grant Stewardship:
a. Reviews reports, budgets, and other correspondence from program staff to ensure that materials meet the needs and expectations of foundation donors. 
b. Monitors proposal deadlines, and manages proposal submissions through the defined review process.
c. Collaborates with the Unit directors and NYAM’s Office of Grants Management which manages federal, state and city grants and reviews budgets for all foundation, corporate and government grant submissions to create customized budgets for proposals. (
d. Works with a Development Associate and the President’s Office to ensure timely and accurate preparation of acknowledgement letters for foundation and corporate donors.
e. Works closely with NYAM staff to maintain accurate and timely information in databases, electronic and hard copy files.  Tracks reporting deadlines and requirements, providing reminders and background information to executive, program and development staff.

 

Qualifications

• A minimum of 5 years experience, including in foundation relations or corporate foundation grants management.
• Strong interpersonal skills
• A track record of proven success in growing foundation and corporate grants in a non-profit institution
• Able to assimilate information about NYAM from a variety of sources and craft persuasive proposals.
• Comfort with development and use of data bases and metrics for tracking and measuring grant management and grant program outcomes.
• Proven superior writing skills with a precise, clear and compelling style.
• Cultural awareness and sensitivity
• Superior organizational skills and attention to accuracy and detail.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and internet-based research
• Prior experience with Salesforce and/or Convio database software preferred.

Experience

Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.
