The New York Academy of Medicine advances the health of people in cities. An independent organization since 1847, NYAM addresses the health challenges facing the world's urban populations through interdisciplinary approaches to policy leadership, education, community engagement and innovative research.

Drawing on the expertise of diverse partners worldwide and more than 2,000 elected Fellows from across the professions, our current priorities are

  • To create environments in cities that support healthy aging
  • To strengthen systems that prevent disease and promote the public's health
  • To implement interventions that eliminate health disparities

Summary and Description

The DASH-NY (Designing a Strong and Healthy New York) is New York’s obesity prevention coalition and policy center. See www.dashny.org. The coalition is comprised of representatives from multiple sectors who work collaboratively to identify policy and systems changes that can reduce the prevalence of obesity in our communities. The policy center conducts research and analysis on policies that will contribute to healthier people in healthy communities. The center also provides trainings and technical assistance to support local-level policy projects to improve opportunities for healthy eating and active living. 2-3 interns with excellent writing skills are needed to fulfill the following tasks:

Duties and Responsibilities

• Conducting literature reviews to build upon the DASH-NY compendium of obesity prevention policy resources and recommendations. This document currently cites evidence-based policy recommendations for obesity prevention and will be expanded upon and reformatted for publication.
• Updating the DASH-NY Policy Database (obesitypolicies.org) by adding new policy examples, identifying relevant peer-reviewed and gray literature, and implementation examples for both new and existing policies in the database.
• Contributing research and writing for a joint use document that provides schools and community based organizations with advice on how to engage in joint use agreements. This will require reviewing literature and conducting in-person or telephone interviews.
• Helping staff two of the DASH-NY Work Groups. These groups consist of policy experts and CBO representatives. You will help prepare materials for work group calls, take minutes, and assist with needed follow-up, such as research and development of documents.
• Writing 5-8 brief (3-5 paragraph) articles for the DASH-NY newsletter and assisting with newsletter production overall.
• Contributing to the DASH-NY social media efforts and assisting with the overall social media strategy.
