Staff Profile: Thomas G. Kannampallil

Thomas G. Kannampallil
Assistant Director, Center for Cognitive Studies in Medicine and Public Health

Thomas Kannampallil joined the staff of NYAM in 2012 as the Assistant Director at the Center for Cognitive Studies in Medicine and Public Health. His research interests are in the areas of human computer interaction (HCI), cognitive models of clinical decision-making and clinical workflows.

His current and recent research focuses on the evaluation of (a) information seeking and use behavior of clinicians, (b) complexity of health care systems, (b) automated analysis of clinical workflows using radio frequency identification (RFID) sensors, (d) social networks of at-risk populations such as smokers, and their impact on social learning.

Thomas has published in a number of journals including ACM Transactions of Computer-Human Interaction (ToCHI), Journal of Biomedical Informatics (JBI), ACM CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work), and proceedings of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) meetings. Prior to joining NYAM, he was a research fellow at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (2009-2010), research associate at the Beckman Institute (2008-2009) and IBM TJ Watson Research Center. He did his graduate work at Pennsylvania State University.
