Staff Profile: Linda Weiss

Linda Weiss, PhD
Director, Center for Evaluation and Applied Research

Linda Weiss, PhD joined the staff of NYAM in 1997 and is now the Director of the Center for Evaluation and Applied Research (CEAR). CEAR works with a broad range of not-for-profit and governmental organizations to investigate and assess initiatives that seek to improve the health and well-being of populations in New York City, New York State, and across the country. 

Linda has extensive experience in mixed method and qualitative research, with a primary focus on issues affecting low-income and other vulnerable populations. Her work has included formative, process and outcome evaluations addressing health care delivery, barriers to care, medication adherence, behavior change, and health education. Current and recent research focuses on:
• Availability of translated medication instructions for immigrant patients using New York City pharmacies
• Integration of Buprenorphine/Naloxone treatment for treatment of heroin and other opioid dependence in HIV primary care settings
• Faith-based programming to reduce the incidence and health implications of diabetes
• Processes for developing—and outcomes related to—a Patient-Centered Medical Home model within a community health center system
• Effectiveness of home remediation and parent education in reducing symptoms of asthma for children living in East Harlem public housing
• Community based participatory research to reduce health disparities in the South Bronx and other low income and minority communities

Linda has published in a number of journals, including the American Journal of Public Health, JAIDS, AIDS Care, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Journal of Urban Health, and Journal of General Internal Medicine. Her pharmacy research was reported on in JAMA, the Washington Post, National Public Radio and other media outlets; it was also used in advocacy efforts that successfully changed regulations regarding medication instructions provided by pharmacies to limited English proficient patients.  She has a PhD in anthropology from Columbia University, where she received a Fulbright Fellowship to carry out research in Nepal.
