Background
The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) has been advancing the health of people in cities since 1847. An independent organization, NYAM addresses the health challenges facing the world’s urban populations through interdisciplinary approaches to innovative research, education, community engagement and policy leadership. Position Overview
The Director of Individual Giving is responsible for advancing NYAM’s mission by managing and executing all levels of NYAM’s individual giving strategy. Reporting to the Vice President for Development and Communications and working with the development team and senior staff, the Director has oversight for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual donors. The ideal candidate will have proven success in managing a development program and in securing major gifts. S/he must demonstrate a commitment to NYAM’s work and be able to build relationships across a diverse portfolio of donors.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Thoroughly understand NYAM’s mission, culture, values and programs
• Manage a significant portfolio of major gift donors/prospects ($5,000 or more annually) including cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
• Administer a sophisticated development program for annual fund and legacy giving
• Work closely with the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees and development team to implement NYAM’s major campaign initiative
• Will be supported by a Events Coordinator to develop and execute cultivation events for major donors/prospects
Qualifications:
• A minimum of 7–10 years of individual giving development experience
• Demonstrated ability to identify, cultivate, solicit and close major gifts from individuals
• Demonstrated ability to establish, maintain and strengthen relationships with significant donors on behalf of an institution and an understanding of record keeping and stewardship systems that support a successful donor relations program
• Online solicitation experience a plus
