Age-friendly Business

New York City is the financial capital of the United States, as the home of Wall Street and a hub of international commerce. It is also the home of more than 200,000 small businesses. Older adults are important to businesses as both customers and employees and are positive influences on the marketplace and workplace. Businesses have an immeasurable effect on the lives of older New Yorkers as the places where people shop, invest their money, work, and engage with their communities. The Age-friendly Business initiative is focused on making businesses throughout the city more aware of the older adult population, by educating retail stores on how to be age-friendly and informing human resource professionals on the best strategies to retain their older adult employees.
Local Retail Initiative
Older adults often state that they want to see improvements in the places that they frequent the most – businesses and institutions in their own neighborhoods. The Age-Friendly Local Retail Initiative is designed to help businesses attract new customers and better cater to their existing older adult clientele. The more than 1 million older adults in New York City represent a potentially lucrative customer base for businesses. The Local Retail Initiative provides information and support to businesses on how to become age-friendly and market themselves to older adults.
