PET in Breast Cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute, 12.2% of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. In the age of hybrid imaging, PET/CT has had a significant impact in the management of this disease. This presentation will focus on the practical indications and limitations of PET/CT in the breast cancer patient.   In addition, for imaging consultants, understanding the current 2010 American Joint Committee on Cancer staging guidelines is an essential component in providing a clinically relevant report. At the end of this session, this overview will clarify the clinical rationale of hybrid imaging in the management of the breast cancer patient.

About the Speaker(s)

Darlene Metter, MD, FACR, is Professor of Radiology and Vice-Chair of Clinical Education for the Department of Radiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas (UTHSCSA). She is also the Nuclear Medicine Program Director for the US Army, Air Force and UTHSCSA in San Antonio.  Her extensive administrative experience includes Chair (2006-2010) of the ACGME Nuclear Medicine Residency Review Committee, Vice-Chair(2008-2009)of the ACGME Council of Review Committees, and current Co-Chair of the Nuclear Medicine Guidelines Committee for the American College of Radiology. She is an active board member for the Academic Council of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and active Chair of Program Directors. As a gubernatorial re-appointee in 2009 to the Texas Radiation Advisory Board to the State of Texas, she also serves as the Chair of its Medical Subcommittee. In addition, she chairs the UTHSCSA’s Radioactive Drug and Research Committee.

A renowned educator, Dr. Metter is an elected member of the University of Texas Academy of Health Science Education, a charter fellow for UTHSCSA Academy of Master Teachers, and has delivered over 50 invited lectures and Visiting Professorships. She is the 2010 recipient of the Presidential Teaching Excellence Award for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She holds leadership positions at the American Board of Radiology where she is the current Chair of the Nuclear Radiology Certification Exam of the Future and serves as oral board examiner in Diagnostic Radiology.
