NYAM brings together two organizations steeped in producing multicultural, multiethnic main stage musical events. Nicky Laboy & His Latin Ensemble highlights a group of percussionists, vocalists, and dancers sharing the culture of the Caribbean. The musicians represent Puerto Rico, Cuba, and other Caribbean Islands. They will perform songs from the 1940s to modern times, including bomba, plena, rumba, palo, and the sacred music of Cuba and Africa. Oscar- and Grammy-nominated IMPACT Repertory Theater will be their special guest artists, capturing the spoken word, poetry, hip hop and R&B cadence of the contemporary sounds of youth in a multicultural society. This intergenerational performance promises entertainment for people of all ages.

About the Speaker(s)

NICKY LABOY & HIS LATIN ENSEMBLE features a group of talented percussionists, vocalists, and dancers sharing their Caribbean culture. These musicians represent Puerto Rico and Cuba and other Caribbean Islands. They promote and maintain the traditions, and cultures of their Afro/Latino roots through music performed in the States. These artists dance and chant, conjuring the evocative sanctifying realm of the Afro/Latino tradition.

IMPACT REPERTORY THEATRE
Harlem's own 2008 Oscar and 2009 Grammy-nominated youth group features 40 young performers who are part of a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic community. They capture spoken word in engaging and spellbinding performances using poetry, hip hop, and R&B cadence of contemporary sounds. IMPACT believes that theater arts and education play a pivotal role in providing opportunities and transitions for the leaders of tomorrow. IMPACT uses performing arts and the dynamics of leadership training to develop and empower youth.

"IMPACT members are absolutely astoundingly talented." -Harry Belafonte, 2013
