Questions from patients and the general public about omega-3 supplements focus on the controversy and confusing media messages. Dr. Penny Kris-Etherton, who is a leading expert in the field, will address the evidence from metabolic, epidemiological, and clinical trial research with regard to potential benefits and risks from taking fish oil extracts or omega-3 supplements. This program will examine how metabolic, epidemiological, and clinical trial research studies have informed guidelines and consider how health status and lifestyle impact implementation of intake recommendations.

About the Speaker(s)
Dr. Kris-Etherton is Distinguished Professor of Nutrition in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University, where she has been on the faculty since 1979. Her research expertise is cardiovascular nutrition. Dr. Kris-Etherton conducts controlled clinical nutrition studies designed to evaluate the role of diet on risk factors for cardiovascular disease. She has received many honors, and served as the President of the National Lipid Association (2011-2012) and Chair of the Medical Nutrition Council of The American Society of Nutrition (2010-2012). Dr. Kris-Etherton has published over 250 scientific papers, 30 book chapters and co-authored four books.
