The Institute of Medicine (IOM) presents a regional meeting at The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) on Emergency Preparedness and Response to Hurricane Sandy: Report from the Front Lines. This event features New York’s key leaders in the fields of health care, disaster preparedness, social services, and advisors to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo who are on the front lines of New York’s preparation, response, and recovery efforts for Hurricane Sandy. Panelists will provide a unique perspective on disaster preparedness as they speak to their own on-the-ground experiences before, during, and after the storm. Together they will explore the challenges faced during Hurricane Sandy, successes, and ongoing recovery and planning efforts that will ensure a more prepared and resilient New York. NYAM and the IOM will also brief the audience on their joint efforts with the research community to develop a set of priorities for near term research, based on Hurricane Sandy and other recent disasters, that may inform future disaster preparedness, response, and recovery plans.
