The Academy Section on Dentistry and Oral Health

The Section of Dentistry and Oral Health of the New York Academy of Medicine was created to support an oral health component to the Academy’s mission of supporting urban health care, as well as to be a place where dental and medical professionals could meet and exchange ideas. The section on Dentistry and Oral Health welcomes all Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) residents from the greater New York area to attend this special event.

Dr. David Powers will be speaking about his experience as an OMS in the military, where he spent 20 years in the Air Force prior to joining Duke University. Dr. Rabie Shanti recently finished a 2 year microvascular fellowship at LSU Shreveport and joined the University of Pennsylvania as junior faculty. He will be talking about fellowship opportunities as well as his experience as a junior OMS faculty member. Dr. Steven Roser has spent the last 40+ years as one of the leaders in American Academic OMS and will be discussing the benefits of an academic career.

David B. Powers, DMD, MD is currently an Associate Professor of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery at Duke University. From 1990- 2011 he served in the United States Airforce. Dr Powers received his dental degree from the University of Kentucky, medical degree from University of Texas, San Antonio, and received his surgical training at the University of Texas as well as Wilford Hall Airforce Medical Center. During his career in the Airfore, he served as program director of the Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery Training Program at Wilford Hall Medical Center, as well a staff surgeon at the National Naval Medical Center and as an attending surgeon at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Baltimore, MD. Following his retirement from the Airforce, Dr Powers held academic appointments at the Universty of South Florida as well as Duke University.

Steven M. Roser, DMD, MD is currently the DeLos Hill Professor and Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. He received his dental and medical degrees from Harvard University. Following completion of residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA , he joined the faculty at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA. In 1981 he was appointed Division Director or Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Columbia University College of Dentistry and Director of the Presbyterian Hospital Dental Service in New York.  During his twenty three years at Columbia, he was appointed as the Georg Guttman Professor of Craniofacial Surgery and developed a combined MD oral and maxillofacial surgery residency training program. In 2001 he was appointed as Director of Graduate Medical Education for New York Presbyterian Hospital. In 2004 he joined the faculty at Emory.  In addition to his interest in education, since 1991, Dr. Roser has organized international missions performing surgical repair of cleft lip/palate deformities. He is currently the Chair of the Committee on Global Surgery for the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Rabie Shanti, MD, DMD holds a dual appointment at the University of Pennsylvania as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and the Department of Otorhinolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.  Dr. Shanti earned his dental degree (D.M.D.), magna cum laude, from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and his medical degree (M.D.) from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He completed an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at University Hospital/Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. Subsequently, he went on to complete a two-year clinical fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology, Microvascular Reconstruction, and Transoral Robotic Surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences. He has also completed a two-year research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, which was sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Shanti is involved in both clinical and translational research efforts that aim to enhance the efficacy of current treatment paradigms, as well as in the development of innovative treatment strategies for patients with benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. In recognition of his research, he has received numerous honors and awards including the 2007 Daniel M. Laskin Award for the “most outstanding article published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.”
