How do I Search MDConsult?

General Information about:

Basics of Searching MDConsult

To begin your MDConsult search, enter your user name and password (since OVID is not free, access to OVID is open only to participants in the Evidence-based Medicine Resource Center during this course), and press the "Verify" button. From the information page, select the category you would like to search.

Searching Reference Books

MDConsult allows you two methods of searching. You can either choose to search a particular reference book (all books are listed down the left side of the screen) by selecting that book from the menu, or you can choose to search all textbooks at once, by clicking on the "Search" icon, in the upper right hand corner.

  • Searching one book - Select the book you wish to search. The left frame will allow you to toggle back and forth between the book's table of contents and its index. If you don't find what you are looking for, you may wish to search all books at once.
  • Searching all books at once - If you choose to search all books at once, you'll see a search page, which will allow up to six words to be joined by the Boolean operators AND, OR or EXCLUDE. Put in as few or as many terms as you wish. Remember, this is searching the full-text of over 30 books, so you might want to "OR" some synonyms together, to get everything. Then, click on "Search Now". The screen will bring up the books in which the information you requested was found. Just click on the first book, and you will see pages within that book, in which cover your question. Click on the pages that are most relevant to see the full text of the chapter.

Searching the Journal Literature

If you select Searching the Journal literature, you will be presented with the same screen that is available for searching all books. Again, input as many terms as you wish (be aware that you are searching full text, so keep your synonyms handy!), and press "Search Now". MDConsult will then display a list of journal titles and citations contain your search terms. Just click on the hyperlinked text to see the full text of the article.

Searching Practice Guidelines

MDConsult offers access to over 500 practice guidelines. You may locate these by:

  • Authoring Agency - select Authoring Agency to reveal an alphabetical listing of agencies that have practice guidelines available. Click on the author to show the relevant practice guidelines.
  • Specialty - select Specialty to reveal an alphabetical list of medical specialties. Click on the relevant specialty, to display a list (alphabetically arranged by Authoring Agency) of relevant practice guidelines
  • Topic - select Topic to display an alphabetical table. Click on the relevant letter, to see the topics under that letter. Click on the relevant topic to display an alphabetical list of guidelines.
