What is UpToDate?
UpTo Date is a web based electronic textbook that is updated daily. Currently, UpToDate, covers the
following medical specialties:
- Cardiology
- Critical Care
- Diabetes
- Endocrinology
- Hematology
- Hypertension
- Nephrology
- Pulmonary
- Rheumatology
UpToDate provides not only the full-text information, but also will display color illustrations, tables, and
charts. Links are provided to display this information as it relates to the text. UpToDate will
also provide Medline abstracts for some of the articles cited in chapter references. Just click on
the appropriate reference (the reference number will be underlined), to display the citation and abstract.
How Do I Search UpToDate?
UpToDate provides you with two ways to search. You can:
- Search a specific discipline.
- Search the entire database
Searching the Whole Database
To search the entire database, put in a word or phrase. UpToDate does not permit Boolean searching, so
you will not be able to combine terms. UpToDate will then display headings that it believes is closest to
your search term. Click on the most appropriate term, and UpToDate will display a list of the chapters that
contain your search word. Once you have selected a chapter, you will see a list of modifiers, to help you
pinpoint your search. Either select a modifier, or type in a secondary search term. You will be presented
with a shorter, more relevant list of chapters. If you decide not to use a modifier or secondary term, just
look through the list of chapters, and click on the one that seems most appropriate. UpToDate will display
the full-text of the chapter you selected, and the references to that chapter. Or, click on the OUTLINE
button, to see an outline of that chapter's contents. From that outline, click on the appropriate subheading,
to go right to that portion of the chapter.
Searching One "Textbook"
If you decide to select one textbook, just click on the relevant textbook. You will see displayed a table of
contents for that "book". Click on the appropriate subsection to view the full-text of that portion of the
"book". As before, you will be able to easily click to images, tables, charts and Medline abstracts from
within the chapter.
