What is the difference in all those Cochrane Databases?

What is The Cochrane Library?
The Cochrane Library consists of seven databases which are listed below. All seven are available via subscription: on CD-Rom or via the World Wide Web (WWW). Three of the databases (CDSR, DARE and CENTRAL) are also available through Ovid Technologies Evidence-based Medicine Reviews database. DARE, NHS EED and the HTA Database are freely available through the WWW. The contents of the databases are:

  • The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) features the full text of regularly updated systematic reviews, maintained by the various Cochrane Collaborative Review Groups.
  • The Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) contains structured abstracts of systematic reviews, and is maintained by the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York.
  • The Cochran Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTAL) is a bibliographic database (i.e. citation and abstract only) of controlled trials identified by the U.S. Cochrane Center and Cochrane Collaborative Review Groups.
  • The Cochrane Database of Methodology Reviews (CDMR) contains the full text of systematic reviews of methodological studies undertaken by members of the Cochrane Collaboration.
  • The Cochrane Review Methodology Register (CMR) is a bibliographic database of articles and books on methods used in controlled trials and in preparing reviews.
  • The Health Technology Assessment Database (HTA) contains published and in progress health technology assessment reports. It is maintained by the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York.
  • NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED) contains structured abstracts of economic evaluations of health care interventions. It is maintained by the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York.

Cochrane Access via their Web Page and/or CD-Rom
This distributor for the Cochrane Library in North America is John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/home). They update the Cochrane Library on a quarterly basis, and offer subscriptions to individuals for $265 per year. The user can select either World Wide Web access, or a cd-rom subscription Center.
