The Fellows of the New York Academy of Medicine embody the highest levels of achievement and leadership in the fields of medicine and health as well as science, social work, nursing, education, law and research.

Fellows are an elite group of physicians, academicians and other health professionals of the utmost distinction who, taken together comprise a body of knowledge, expertise and commitment that is the foundation of NYAM's strength. Dr. Maloney's lecture entitled "Report of the Cancer of Babe Ruth: Its Medical and Dental Significance" reviewed the dentist’s role in the diagnosis and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and discussed the immense contribution of Babe Ruth to the scientific/medical/dental communities by his willingness to take part in experimental treatment. Congratulations to NYAM Awardee Dr. Elizabeth H. Blackburn. In 2005, Dr. Blackburn received the Academy Medal for Distinguished Contributions in Biomedical Science, and last week, received the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. More...

Dr. Blackburn is an Australian born biological researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, who studies the telomere, a structure at the end of chromosomes that protects the chromosome. Blackburn co-discovered telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes the telomere which leads to the possibility that telomerase might be manipulated for therapeutic purposes to prolong cell life, combat cancer, or offer new insights into the biology of aging.
