Fellows Overview
Since NYAM's founding, Fellows have played an important role in the vibrancy of the institution. Fellows are a distinguished group of physicians, academicians and other health professionals involved in issues relevant to the health of the public. Today’s Fellows are leaders in the fields of law, social work, nursing, education and research as well as health and medicine. Above all, Fellows are generous individuals who give of their time unselfishly to improve the lives of others, especially those who live in the margins of our society.

In addition to the honor of being recognized by one’s peers, Fellowship in The New York Academy of Medicine provides many benefits. Fellows receive a complimentary subscription to the Journal of Urban Health: Bulletin of The New York Academy of Medicine, as well as NYAM’s biannual newsletter, NOTES and a monthly E-Newsletter of up-to-date research and events. Fellows also receive priority invitations to special events, lectureships and symposia, which create opportunities to participate in discussions of issues relevant to enhancing the health and well-being of the public and of health-related professions. These events also provide Fellows with direct access to leaders in medicine, science, public health, health policy and health care delivery. Fellows are also invited to participate in Academy Specialty and Interdisciplinary Sections, which provide continuing medical education opportunities. Importantly, Fellows have expanded access to the holdings in the NYAM Library, including the extensive historical collections and the general collections.

Fellow Spotlight

As NYAM’s Vice President for Programs through 1994, Morris helped to reinvigorate the then-sleepy institution by helping to create one of NYAM’s most prolific research divisions, the Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies. Though Morris relinquished his board seat in 1990 to comply with bylaws that blocked NYAM staff from serving as trustees, he was re-elected in 2003 and was an obvious choice for Chairman when Dr. Jack Barchas’s eight years of service ended in December.
