PLEASE NOTE - The Bowen-Brooks Fellowship program has been temporarily suspended during Oxford University's reorganization of the Programme in Evidence-Based Healthcare. Please check back in the fall of 2009 for updated information on the program.
The Bowen-Brooks Fellowship for Advanced Studies Abroad was established by Elizabeth C. Bowen in memory of her son, and of her physician, Dr. Harlow Brooks. Eligible candidates are physicians who have recently completed residency training in internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, or family practice in a New York area program, who will return to New York to practice medicine at the completion of their studies.
The Bowen-Brooks Fellowship provides full tuition, a travel allowance, and a $50,000 stipend to enable the Fellow to spend one year in Oxford, England at the Oxford University Programme in Evidence-Based Health Care, in affiliation with Green College, Oxford University, and the John Radcliffe Hospital. Depending on the Fellow's level of academic commitment, either a Diploma or MSc degree can be awarded on completion of the course requirements.
Candidates are required to submit an application, curriculum vitae and letters of recommendation from their department chair and other training supervisors. A personal interview may be required.
At the end of the one year period, the Fellow is required to provide NYAM with a thorough report on the experience as well as to submit for publication a manuscript on the research subject pursued. Support from the Bowen-Brooks Fellowship for Advanced Studies at Oxford University must be acknowledged in all publications.
