The New York Academy Historical Collections sponsors two fellowships: the Paul Klemperer Fellowship in the History of Medicine, and the Audrey and William Helfand Fellowship in the Medical Humanities. The application process is the same for both fellowships. Our selection committee, comprising prominent historians and medical humanities scholars, will choose both fellows from a common pool of applications.
Deadline
Applications for awards to commence on June 1, 2008 must be received no later than Tuesday, March 4, 2008. (We must receive recommendation letters by March 6, 2008). It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that we receive all materials, including letters of recommendation, by the deadlines.
Notification
Candidates will be informed of the results by May 9, 2008.
Selection procedure
After review of completed applications and supporting materials, the final selection of the fellows will be made by the Helfand and Klemperer Fellowship Committee of The New York Academy of Medicine, subject to the approval of the Trustees of the Academy. We ask that applicants refrain from calling to inquire about the status of their applications. All applicants will be advised of the results of the Committee's deliberations.
Non-discrimination
It is the policy of The New York Academy of Medicine to operate without discrimination as to age, race, religion, sex, handicap, or national origin, in the employment and promotion of staff. This policy will be applied to the selection of both fellowships.
Awards and use of funds
Each fellow will receive a grant of $5,000, for a project commencing at some point after June 1, 2008 and terminating by May 31, 2009.
The Paul Klemperer Fellowship provides support for research using the collections of The New York Academy of Medicine Library as a historical resource. The Klemperer Fellow is expected to spend at least four weeks in New York City, working at The New York Academy of Medicine. The grant, therefore, should cover travel to and living expenses in New York City, as well as other expenses incurred in the course of scholarly research (photocopying, etc.). It may also supplement other fellowship or salary income. Although the Helfand Fellowship does not have a strict residency requirement, proposals that make use of the Academy's resources will be given priority.
Fellows are each required to present a seminar at the Academy, and to submit a final report on work done at the Academy Library by the end of the award period.
Publications
Any publications resulting from work supported by the Fellowships must acknowledge the assistance received from The New York Academy of Medicine. Copies of such publications must be submitted to the Academy Library.
