The Steve Miller Fund for Humanism in Medicine at The New York Academy of Medicine was established in 2005 by family, friends and admirers who want to honor the memory of Dr. Steve Miller and advance his crusade to embed humanism in medicine. The Fund will support an annual lecture and award, as well as educational and research opportunities that demonstrate and investigate new ways of teaching human, social, and cultural dimensions of illness, health, and health care.
The Fund will expand awareness of the need for humanism in medical care, promote humanism in medical education, and develop and evaluate curricula, teaching strategies, and clinical interventions to foster humanism in clinical care. In addition to the annual lecture and award, the fund will offer mini-grants to support work by medical students and residents, visiting professorships, summer fellowships for medical students, curriculum development, and research in humanism by students, residents and young faculty members.
The annual lecture is made possible by an endowment from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, which has generously support the lecture series since its inception.
