Background: The New York Academy of Medicine is pleased to announce the competition for The Ferdinand C. Valentine Medical Student Research Grants in Urology.
Eligibility Requirements:
Competition is open to M.D. candidates who are either enrolled in a medical school in New York City, Long Island, Westchester County, or New Jersey, or plan to conduct research at a New York-area institution. Funding will be provided for research projects lasting a minimum of ten weeks in the summer of 2009 preferably during the summer between the first and second years of medical school, but medical students in any year of their education may apply. Students are encouraged to pursue research projects that extend beyond the startup period.
Application Process:
Applicants must provide a one-page research proposal, as well as a letter of support from the faculty mentor supervising the research. This letter should outline a significant and meaningful role for the student participating in the research project. In addition, applications must include the career goals and research background of the applicant and an NIH-format biographical sketch of the faculty mentor, as well as a listing of the current sources of support for the research lab. Mentors are discouraged from sponsoring more than one student and students enrolled in combined MD/PhD programs are not eligible for this program.
Award Information:
Up to four grants will be awarded with a stipend of $3,500 for students pursuing a clinical or basic science research project in the field of Urology in the summer of 2009. The stipend will be paid directly to the student in two equal installments (at the beginning and end of grant period). The second payment will be contingent upon the submission of a written report on the project. Announcement of the successful applicants for the Ferdinand C. Valentine Grants will be made in time for a summer research project to commence. Student grantees are additionally expected to present their research findings at NYAM's annual Medical Student Forum to an audience of NYAM Fellows, faculty mentors, research colleagues and fellow student grant awardees.
Applications are due by February 2, 2009.
