Web-based Resource Guide
Service provider members of the Urban Research Center (URC) Community Action Board (CAB) identified a need for a Harlem-specific resource guide that can serve as a ready reference for community service providers, particularly as an aid in referring clients. The URC staff members, under CAB direction, developed a database of social services available in Harlem.
Harlem social service providers do not currently have a single, reliable and updated source that can provide timely assistance in referring clients. CAB members and URC staff are in the process of developing a web-based resource guide to help improve the health of the community using a community-based participatory approach.
The Harlem Resource Guide is available at www.harlemresourceguide.org . If you have any questions about the web-based guide feel free to contact Princess Fortin, Resource Guide Administrator, at pfortin@nyam.org.
Printed Survival Guide
The printed Survival Guide provides information on health and social supports for substance users in Harlem. Specifically, the guide aims to improve substance users' access to community-based services, such as substance abuse treatment, soup kitchens, and mental health services.
The guide includes three sections: health information and how to navigate the system to obtain services; a reference list of community services; and relevant "hotline" numbers. The bright colors and design incorporates local street art with feedback from active substance users. Current and former users were engaged in the development of the guide through all aspects of its content and look. The guide was developed after the community advisory board (CAB) of CUES' Urban Research Center identified the health of substance users as an action priority. The CAB is composed of community service providers, department of health workers and academics.
