David E. Rogers Fellowship Program
The David E. Rogers Fellowship is named for renowned physician, medical educator and humanitarian, Dr. David E. Rogers. The fellowship is meant to enrich the educational experiences of medical students through projects conducted in the summer between their first and second years of medical school. The projects bear on medicine as a social enterprise-that is, as an enterprise devoted to the capacity of medicine in any and all of its expressions to serve human needs, in particular the needs of underserved or disadvantaged patients or populations.
Now in its fifth year of broadening the experiences of future physicians and scientists, the Fellowship has afforded dozens of the nation’s most promising young medical students the opportunity to conduct research and help medically underserved communities all over the world, from places as distant as South Asia and Africa to those as close as Brooklyn and the Bronx. Students’ research topics have covered a wide array of innovative topics that involve clinical investigation, health policy analysis, activities linking biomedicine, the social infrastructure and human need, and community activities.
Half of the fellowships awarded are dedicated to projects focused on HIV/AIDS prevention or care, a special tribute to Dr. Rogers, who in his life played a leadership role in the fight against AIDS and other infectious diseases. Special consideration is given to projects carried out within New York City.
The David E. Rogers Fellowship continues Dr. Rogers’ efforts in life to couple the mentoring of young physicians with their active participation in research and service activities to society’s most vulnerable populations for the mutual benefit of both physician and patient.
To continue to help young medical students enhance their medical education by working with vulnerable populations Contribute Now and support the David E. Rogers Fellowship.
