Statement of Support for a NYS Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax

Individuals and organizations supporting the SSB tax can sign onto the following statement:

The undersigned organizations wish to express their support for increasing the price of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). We support a surcharge designed to discourage SSB consumption for the following reasons:

New York State has an unacceptably high rate of obesity. In 2008, 60% of New Yorkers were overweight or obese, and obesity among children and adolescents has tripled in the past three decades. Obesity causes serious health problems like type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and costs New York an estimated $7.6 billion a year.
Sugar-sweetened beverages are the food category most strongly linked with the increased rates of obesity. A review of 88 studies confirmed the link between obesity and the calories in sugared beveragesⁱ. In 2004, adolescents consumed an average of 300 calories per day from SSBs, accounting for 13 percent of their daily caloric intakeⁱⁱ. In New York City, more than one in four adults consumes at least one soda a dayⁱⁱⁱ.
Raising the price of SSBs will reduce consumption. The Institute of Medicine has recommended taxation as a strategy to reduce consumption of SSBs^iv and multiple studies have shown that when the prices of unhealthy foods are raised, people switch to healthier foods^v. Raising prices has been highly effective in reducing tobacco and alcohol use, especially among youth who are more price-sensitive.

Taxing sugared beverages will not end the obesity epidemic on its own but it will help. A comprehensive, policy-based approach that increases opportunities for physical activity and for buying healthy foods is also needed. 72% of New Yorkers would support a sugared-beverage tax that would help fund such obesity prevention efforts^vi.

Given New York's obesity epidemic and dire budgetary situation, now is the time to enact this important measure to both protect the public's health and raise needed revenue. It's win for health, a win for the State, and a win for the public.
