Frances P. Lawrance, Ph.D.

Fran Lawrance is a Social Work Program Officer at The New York Academy of Medicine. She joined the Academy in June 2000 to work on the John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Social Work Field Practicum Development Program. She previously worked as Assistant Dean for Academic Programs at the School of Social Welfare, University at Albany where she was a major contributor to the development and implementation of the school’s Hartford Planning and Implementation Grants.

Prior to that, Lawrance served as: Department Director and in clinical positions in Social Work at the Johns Hopkins Hospital; in clinical social work positions in child welfare in Virginia; as a counselor in a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed children with seizure disorders; and, as a community organizer in the VISTA Volunteer Program. She recently completed a short-term clinical assignment in Geriatric Psychiatry. She has taught social work practice and research courses at the master’s and bachelor’s levels and served as a field instructor for a number of schools of social work.

Lawrance received a B.A. in French from Manhattanville College, an M.S.W. from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University at Albany, State University of New York. Her professional interests include social work practice in aging, and health and social work education. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Council on Social Work Education and the Gerontological Society of America.
