Leadership and Responsibility in Disaster Management:Lessons Learned from the U.S.and U.K.
June 12-13, 2007
Each year, The New York Academy of Medicine and the Royal Society of Medicine of London hold a joint conference on a topic of major significance to health in which the two countries may be able to learn from each other. The fifth symposium took place in New York on June 12 and 13, 2007, and focused on responsibility and accountability in the face of disaster.
Drawing on lessons learned from September 11th, anthrax and Katrina in the United States, and the 7/7 subway bombings, the polonium 210 poisoning and the recent spate of letter bombs in the United Kingdom, the conference examined the ambiguous interface among elected officials, the public health enterprise and the media in the face of man-made or natural disasters. High level, involved individuals addressed these issues by focusing on accountability and responsibility in order to extract lessons and delineate courses of action.
