Dying for Life: Maternal Mortality in the Developing World

Ann M. Starrs, is President of Family Care International(FCI). FCI is dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safer around the world by working to ensure access to quality maternal and newborn health care; helping women and girls to prevent and manage unintended pregnancy; promoting the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people and other under served groups; and reducing the spread of HIV, especially among women and young people. Ms. Starrs will provide a global perspective on the burden of maternal death and disability in the developing world by discussing the scope of the problem in Africa and Asia.

The Final Stamp: The Jewish Doctors in the Warsaw Ghetto

Set in 1942, Final Stamp is a beautifully written historical novel depicting the lives of Jewish physicians working and living in the Warsaw Ghetto. These doctors sought to document the effects of starvation to ensure that those who survived would receive the right kind of care-focusing on the damage done. Unfortunately—the doctors did not survive—but the document did and later became the cornerstone of the medical community’s understanding and treatment of starvation.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in US Children's Health and Healthcare: How We Can Level the Playing Field

Dr. Flores is professor of pediatrics and public health, director of General Pediatrics, the Judith and Charles Ginsburg Chair in Pediatrics, and the director of the Academic General Pediatrics Fellowship at UT Southwestern and Children’s Medical Center Dallas.

2009 Duncan W. Clark Lecture

Benjamin K. Chu, MD, is regional president for Southern California of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals. Prior to joining Kaiser in 2005, Dr. Chu was president of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), senior associate dean at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (affiliated with Harlem Hospital), vice president for clinical affairs, and associate dean at the New York University Medical Center. Dr. Chu has been a NYAM Fellow since 1996 and serves on the NYAM Policy Oversight Committee.

The annual Duncan W. Clark Lecture is named for former Academy President (1983 to 1984) and Trustee (1985 to 1989) Duncan W. Clark, MD. Dr. Clark, an honored physician, teacher and mentor had a distinguished record of achievement in teaching, research and advocacy to ultimately improve the practice of medicine.
