Alan J. Wein, MD, PhD (Hon.), Professor and Chief of Division of Urology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Chief of Urology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, was awarded the 2011 Ferdinand C. Valentine Award during a dinner and lecture on April 6, 2011. The lecture was co-sponsored by the NYAM Section on Urology and the New York Section of the American Urological Association.
In his lecture, Dr. Wein focused on the development of a simple and user-friendly classification system applicable to all types of Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction (LUTD). Dr. Wein has particular interest in the area of prostate cancer and his expertise in the areas of voiding function and dysfunction are widely acknowledged, particularly in the areas of urinary incontinence, neurogenic dysfunction, overactive bladder, interstitial cystitis, and dysfunction secondary to prostate enlargement.
Dr. Wein was one of the founding members of the Society of Urologic Oncology and was elected to membership in the other two groups that are concerned with the evaluation and management of cancer: The American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Society of Surgical Oncology. Other society memberships include American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons; Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons; American Surgical Association and Society of Urologic Oncology.
In addition to his appointment at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Dr. Wein serves as Chief of Urology and Director of the Urology Residency Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Princeton University and received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed training in Surgery and Urology at the University of Pennsylvania including a fellowship at the Harrison Department of Surgical Research.
Dr. Wein is the editor in chief of Campbell-Walsh Urology, Associate Editor of the British Journal of Urology, International and has over 850 publications and has written or edited 28 books on urology. He writes on topics that include the evaluation and management of urologic cancer, the physiology and pharmacology of the lower urinary tract, the evaluation and management of voiding function and dysfunction, and urinary incontinence.
