A Legacy that Launched a Career

Jeffrey S. Borer, MD, the 1974 recipient of NYAM’s Glorney-Raisbeck Fellowship in the Medical Sciences, credits the experience as valuable in launching his successful career in cardiovascular medicine. “Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he told the guests at the annual recognition luncheon for NYAM’s John Stearns Legacy Society on June 6. The event celebrated the donors who influence the future of NYAM by establishing endowment funds or remembering NYAM in their estate plans.

Ethel Glorney was one such donor. The Glorney-Raisbeck Fellowship in the Medical Sciences was established by Miss Glorney in 1961 in honor of her personal physician, Milton J. Raisbeck. For fifty years, the vision of her generous gift has allowed NYAM to support the work of promising young researchers whose findings have improved or saved the lives of countless individuals.

Dr. Borer received the Fellowship early in his career, after three years as a cardiology fellow and participant in NIH-funded animal studies that led to the creation of a proposal to test nitroglycerin in heart attack patients. As a Glorney-Raisbeck Fellow, he continued this line of research, ultimately producing the first demonstration that nitroglycerin is a safe and effective treatment for heart attacks. This seminal study altered the practice of medicine in heart attack patients.
According to Dr. Borer, part of the great value of the Glorney-Raisbeck Fellowships is that they provide “intense research training in an outstanding environment.” He noted that in contrast to PhD programs, medical schools do not routinely teach research methodology. “Glorney-Raisbeck is one of the few programs that does this for MDs,” he said. “It’s critically important to have this kind of research training. Without these types of programs, we won’t be able to move forward from where we are today.” Today Dr. Borer leads Cardiovascular Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and College of Medicine.

Also present at the event were former Glorney-Raisbeck Fellows Michael Alderman, MD (1967 recipient) and Detlef Wencker, MD (1998 recipient).

Chairman of the NYAM Board of Trustees Thomas Q. Morris, MD, recognized a new member of the John Stearns Legacy Society, Brian J. Curtin, MD. Dr. Morris also emphasized the importance of unrestricted endowed gifts, which provide funding for NYAM’s work, citing the example of the groundbreaking AIDS research performed by NYAM staff in the early 1990s before external funding was available.

The John Stearns Legacy Society recognizes donors who influence the future of NYAM by establishing endowment funds or remembering NYAM in their estate plans.

John Stearns, MD, the first president of NYAM in 1847, was one of the most distinguished physicians of his day. He championed the establishment of high professional standards and was instrumental in improving the health of the public nationwide.
