Terry T. Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, Vice Chairman of the NYAM Board of Trustees, was appointed Dean at Bouvé College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University. Dr. Fulmer, a geriatric nurse practitioner whose research focuses on the acute care of the elderly, most recently served as the Erline Perkins McGriff Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at New York University. She will join Northeastern on October 1, 2011.
A member of the NYAM Board since 2008, Dr. Fulmer was named the founding dean of the College of Nursing at NYU in 2005, and has held a faculty appointment there since 1995. She also served as co-director of the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing, and co-director of the Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers at NYU. She is also an adjunct professor of medicine at the NYU School of Medicine.
A trailblazer in the fields of both nursing and geriatrics, Dr. Fulmer became the first nurse to serve as the president of the Gerontological Society of America. She obtained a Master’s Degree in nursing and a Doctorate in Higher Education administration at Boston College and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
Dr. Jo Ivey Boufford, NYAM President, applauded Dr. Fulmer’s appointment, noting that “Terry is a national leader in nursing education and has shown a life-long commitment to the promotion of interdisciplinary education and practice as fundamental to the health workforce needed for the future. Her appointment as Dean at Northeastern is a perfect fit and she will bring tremendous energy, wisdom and experienced leadership into her new role.”
In a recent profile in NYAM’s NOTES newsletter, Dr. Fulmer spoke about her involvement with the NYAM Board and her desire to see the organization grow in its mission and in its work around healthy aging, prevention and the elimination of disparities.
“Our distinction is our mission,” Dr. Fulmer said of NYAM. “I believe in the mission, and I believe that leadership will bring our vision, values, and goals to fruition. Being part of NYAM as a Fellow, I’m able to see the progress being made.”
Dr. Boufford noted that “Terry has played an instrumental role in helping to shape NYAM’s healthy aging initiative. We are delighted that we will continue to benefit from her advice and counsel as Trustee as she assumes her role at Northeastern.
