NYAM’s 17th Annual Gala Honors Leaders in Global and Urban Health

More than 300 guests gathered at The Pierre in midtown Manhattan on Thursday, September 22 to honor William C. Weldon, Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, and Marcel Van Ooyen, Executive Director of GrowNYC during NYAM’s 17th Annual Gala. Funds from the event will help to support NYAM’s mission and its core work in the areas of healthy aging, prevention, and the elimination of health disparities.

The event was co-chaired by John K. Castle, Chairman, Castle Harlan, Inc.; Thomas L. Harrison, Chairman and CEO, Diversified Agency Services, Omnicom Group, Inc.; A. Gifford Miller, Principal, Miller Strategies; Mark L. Wagar, President and CEO, Empire BlueCross BlueShield; and Todd Rief, Executive Vice President, Honeywell Fire Systems, Business Leader, Honeywell HomMed.

Mr. Weldon was honored for his exemplary leadership of Johnson & Johnson and his forty-year commitment to advancing health and improving the lives of billions around the globe, and Johnson & Johnson was acknowledged for its outstanding philanthropic initiatives that support prevention and health education and their worldwide efforts training committed health professionals.

In his remarks, Mr. Weldon cited the many priorities shared by Johnson & Johnson and NYAM in our work to advance the health of people in cities across the globe, including prevention, maternal and child health, and most especially, our shared support for the profession of nursing. For the past ten years, Johnson and Johnson has spearheaded a national campaign to encourage individuals to enter the nursing profession, a highlight of Mr. Weldon’s remarks, which were greeted enthusiastically by several nursing professionals attending the gala.

“Tonight’s recognition is especially meaningful because the Academy and Johnson & Johnson are so aligned on what is important in health,” Mr. Weldon said. “Both organizations share a commitment to global health, and a long-term focus to help people live healthier and more productive lives.”

NYAM presented its second annual Urban Health Champion Award to Marcel Van Ooyen, Executive Director of GrowNYC, in honor of his extraordinary accomplishments improving the quality of life in New York City communities and creating the next generation of health and environment leaders. His efforts to develop innovative programs that focus on accessibility to fresh fruits and vegetables include Grow to Learn NYC: Citywide Schools Gardens Initiative, a public-private partnership with the Mayor’s Fund to Advance NYC created to inspire, promote and facilitate the creation of sustainable school gardens in every New York City public school. GrowNYC also runs 53 Greenmarkets in the five boroughs offering fresh, healthy, local produce from small farmers who keep 30,000 acres in production.

“NYAM’s policy work has opened doors for GrownNYC to bring healthier food and education programs to underserved neighborhoods,” Mr. Van Ooyen said. “I look forward to working with all of you on our continued efforts to make New York City a healthier place.”

Dr. Jo Ivey Boufford, NYAM President, said both Mr. Weldon and Mr. Van Ooyen have done much to advance the cause of urban health through their work and their steadfast commitment toward making New York City a healthy place to live, work, and play.

“In almost every facet of their careers, Bill and Marcel have demonstrated a willingness to harness the resources and consensus necessary to bring about change in our health systems – from greater emphasis on nutrition to propelling the business community toward taking a greater role in health related issues – that have truly impacted our city and our nation,” Dr. Boufford said.
