Christine Cassel, NYAM Fellow and Former Trustee, Appointed President and CEO of National Quality Forum

Dr. Christine K. Cassel, a member of the NYAM Board of Trustees from 2008-11 and a NYAM Fellow since 1996, has been appointed as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Quality Forum, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of American health care.

Dr. Cassel has devoted her life to service to patients and the public at large. Board certified in both internal medicine and geriatric medicine, Dr. Cassel has achieved a number of firsts for women in medicine.

She was the first female board chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the first female president of the American College of Physicians, and the first dean of Oregon Health and Science University. She is also an active scholar and lecturer in fulfillment of a lifelong commitment to advancing knowledge, better care, and new ideas. Dr. Cassel’s ideas have permeated practice and policy.
Dr. Cassel served as President and CEO of the American Board of Internal Medicine and ABIM Foundation and was previously President of the American Federation for Aging Research and the American College of Physicians.

“Christine’s appointment is a source of great pride for NYAM,” said Jo Ivey Boufford, NYAM President. “As a member of the NYAM Board of Trustees, Christine provided thoughtful leadership and meaningful contributions to our work, and having an individual with her vision and leadership skills and experience will be critical to the next stage of national standard setting for health and health care.”

Dr. Cassel served as an early member of the National Priorities Partnership, the public-private partnership whose work contributed to the establishment of the National Quality Strategy. More recently Dr. Cassel served as a member of the Measure Applications Partnership Coordinating Committee, advising the federal government on which performance measures to use in specific federal programs. As part of new efforts to reduce measurement burden and increase aligned use of measures, she chaired a multi-stakeholder task force specifically focused on cardiovascular and diabetes care, recommending a set of measures that could be optimally used across settings and programs.

A graduate of The University of Chicago, Dr. Cassel received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She is the recipient of numerous honorary degrees and awards of distinction, including honorary Fellowships in the Royal College of Medicine of England and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and a Mastership in the American College of Physicians.
