On November 16, 2012, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and NYAM convened a meeting of health care providers, academia; first responders, community organizations, philanthropic organizations and disaster preparedness and response experts from New York, New Jersey and federal agencies to explore the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The meeting focused on myriad challenges faced during preparation, response, and recovery, identifying gaps in knowledge affecting disaster preparedness and response, and developing a set of priorities for near-term research based on Hurricane Sandy and other recent disasters that may inform future disaster preparedness, response, and recovery plans.

The New York Academy of Medicine with support from the New York State Heath Foundation released a new report, Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective.
This report identifies opportunities that build on both the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and New York’s ongoing efforts toward improving the health of its 19 million residents.
