NYAM Fellows Support Junior Fellows Through Mentoring

This year, NYAM’s Office of School Health Programs (OSHP) has partnered with the Office of Trustee and Fellowship Affairs to foster mentorship activities between NYAM Fellows and the Junior Fellows and Scholars. The Junior Fellows Program and The Scholars Program: Science Enrichment and Career Awareness for Junior Fellows Alumni provide educational experiences to assist participating middle school, high school, and college students in pursuing careers in public health, science, medicine, and research. NYAM Fellows provide mentorship activities to the Junior Fellows and Scholars in person, via email and/or phone by being available to discuss their expertise, career path and/or student projects; creating and hosting a lab or research experience; or providing internship opportunities.

To date, Deborah Coady, MD; Judith Flores, MD; Michelle Kahan, MS, MA; Daisy Medina-Kreppein DNP, FNP-BC; and Pattie Mongelia, MS have been involved in helping the Junior Fellows with their research projects over the course of the 2012-13 school year, functioning as invaluable resources for the 8th and 9th grade students by lending their expertise. On February 19, 2013, in partnership with OSHP, Stuart Feldman, PhD, Dean of the Touro College of Pharmacy, along with several of his colleagues, hosted a tour and information session for the Scholars at Touro to educate them about a future career path in pharmacy. The event for Junior Fellows alumni in high school and beyond included sessions exploring the multiple avenues of the pharmacy profession, and pharmacy and the public’s health, in addition to a behind the scenes view of the laboratory facilities. NYAM Fellows Janet Mackin, RN, EdD and Jack Resnick, MD have also volunteered to host future tours at their respective facilities.

If you would be willing to become a mentor or provide a tour of your facility for NYAM’s Junior Fellows and Scholars, please contact Melissa Mendelson at mmendelson@nyam.org or 212-822-7225.
