Dr. Tom F. Lue Receives 2013 Ferdinand C. Valentine Award

Tom F. Lue, MD, FACS, was awarded the 2013 Ferdinand C. Valentine Award during a reception at NYAM on April 10, 2013. Dr. Lue is Professor and Vice-Chair of Urology, Emil Tanagho Endowed Chair in Clinical Urology, and Founder of the Knuppe Molecular Urology Laboratory at the University of California at San Francisco.

The event was co-sponsored by the NYAM Section on Urology and the New York Chapter of the American Urological Association and was attended by 220 urologists from around the tri-state region. Following the award ceremony, Dr. Lue delivered the Valentine Lecture on “Non-Invasive Progenitor Cell Therapy.”

Dr. Lue’s current basic science research projects involve the development of a non-invasive progenitor cell therapy for various degenerative diseases including erectile dysfunction, stress urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, and degenerative renal diseases. He is a recipient of NIH MERIT Award for his translational research in penile physiology and erectile dysfunction. He has been the recipient of the American Urological Association’s Gold Cystoscope Award and the American Foundation of Urological diseases’ Most Innovative Researcher Award. In May 2012, he received the Presidential Citation Award for his research in ED, priapism, and Peyronie’s disease from the American Urological Association.

Besides being listed in The Best Doctors in America and America’s Top Doctors for many years, Dr. Lue was named one of the 8 top doctors for men by Men’s Health Magazine in 2003. He has published more than 410 peer reviewed articles and more than 100 book chapters. His research team has trained more than 70 postgraduate doctors from many countries.

Dr. Ferdinand Valentine was elected a Fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine on January 2, 1896. He was a founder of the American Urological Association and its first secretary and third President. He was Professor of Genitourinary Diseases at the New York School of Clinical Medicine and made many contributions to the medical literature. His clinical appointments included Consulting Genitourinary Surgeon to the Manhattan State Hospital, to the West Side German Dispensary and the Red Cross Hospital. The Valentine Medal and Lectureship was created by the Valentine family to celebrate his many contributions to medicine.

NYAM Report - Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective

The New York Academy of Medicine with support from the New York State Heath Foundation released a new report, Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective.

This report identifies opportunities that build on both the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and New York’s ongoing efforts toward improving the health of its 19 million residents.
