In Memoriam: NYAM Fellow Mildred Mailick, DSW (1927-2013)

NYAM mourns the loss of Mildred Mailick, DSW, a Fellow since 1997 who was instrumental in building a strong Social Work Section that reflects the best and the brightest social work leaders in health and mental health care.

Dr. Mailick had a long and distinguished career as a Professor of Social Work at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College with a special interest in developing the role of social work in the health care system – both in hospitals and in community health programs. She maintained a 30-year affiliation with the Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Social Work Services where she linked the classroom to the field. She recognized that social workers who are trained in both clinical assessment and intervention skills as well as to understand the psychosocial environment in which patients exist were needed providers in the health, mental health and long term care systems. She was an early proponent of interprofessional collaboration and training, designing courses that highlighted outstanding examples of interprofessional collaboration in the field – in cancer care, substance abuse treatment, hemophilia, and other chronic illness. She was also selected as a Social Work Pioneer by the National Association of Social Workers.

Dr. Mailick was in practice as a clinician or as an educator for fifty years (1948-1998). Prior to receiving her doctorate, she was engaged in both agency and private practice. She taught in Hunter’s masters and doctoral program for 23 years. She published more than 25 articles, presented 30 papers at conferences, edited two books, and contributed six chapters and reviews to books focusing mostly on clinical issues in health care. She was the Associate Editor of Social Work in Health Care (1989-1999) and served on the editorial board.

She received her undergraduate and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Chicago, and her doctorate in Social Work from Columbia University.
