Dr. Barondess' Letter to the Editor of The New York Times

To the Editor:

Re "Bush Plan to Avert Work Injuries Seeks Voluntary Steps by Industry" (front page, April 6):

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations set aside by the Bush administration early in 2001 had been more than a decade in development.

Concerns about the validity of the relation between repetitive workplace stress and injury led to a congressionally requested study by the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine, both at the National Academy of Sciences.

A panel of 19 experts concluded after two years that the scientific evidence is clear in implicating workplace injury as an incremental cause of musculoskeletal injury and in supporting the utility of selectively applied ergonomic measures in reducing such injuries.

Government support of workers at risk should be based on the scientific evidence, and the government should be vigorous in applying it.
