NEW YORK CITY, May 20 - Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., will speak at The New York Academy of Medicine on Wednesday, May 22 at a lecture entitled, "Our Environmental Destiny." The event is free and open to the public.
Kennedy is Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, Chief Prosecuting Attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper and President of the Waterkeeper Alliance. His work with the Riverkeeper helped influence the EPA's recent decision to require dredging of PCBs from the upper Hudson River, dumped by General Electric Co. since the mid-1940s. Riverkeeper is currently campaigning for the immediate shutdown of the Indian Point nuclear reactors in Westchester County.
The Wednesday event is the Linda T. Zidell Memorial Lecture in Environmental Pediatrics, a lecture series organized by the Mount Sinai Center for Children's Health and the Environment. Zidell, who died in 2000 of breast cancer, was a leading figure in the fight against environmentally caused illness. Toxic chemicals off-gassing from new carpet in her home caused her chronic insomnia, memory loss and speech difficulties. Zidell went on to found the Chemical Impact Project, which supports scientific research and helped convince officials from 22 nations to draft laws regulating toxic chemicals.
The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. following an introduction by Dr. Philip Landrigan, chairman of the Mount Sinai Center for Children's Health and the Environment. Hudson Riverkeeper Alex Matthiessen is expected to be on hand, as are several city and state officials. The lecture will be held in Room 20 of the Academy, located at 1216 Fifth Ave. (at 103rd St.). A wine and cheese reception will follow at 5:30 p.m. Please e-mail kcervino@nyam.org to be included on the media list.
Kennedy is a Clinical Professor and Supervising Attorney at the Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic at Pace University School of Law in New York. He is author of The Riverkeepers (1997) and other books.
The New York Academy of Medicine is a non-profit organization founded in 1847 that is dedicated to enhancing the health of the public through research, education and advocacy, with a particular focus on disadvantaged urban populations.
