Village Voice Covers The Academy Library

The Library at The New York Academy of Medicine is profiled in a flattering article in the The Village Voice's Fall Literary Supplement (Oct. 9-15 issue). Author Mark Dery describes the Academy library as "one of the finest medical libraries in the country" and gives readers a peek at some of the more esoteric holdings in the Academy's extensive historic collection. The book titles that grabbed his attention include How to Recognize and Handle Abnormal People, Proceedings of the International Workshop on Nude Mice, and Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe. The article, entitled "Gray Matter," also describes "the library's annals of pseudo-scientific bigotry." Among the books in this category, Dery writes, is Eradication of Syphilis and Crime by the Extirpation, in That Class, of the Procreative Power, an 1878 publication calling for the sterilization of the underclass. Photographs of the library by noted lenswoman Sylvia Plachy accompany the article.
