Dr. Jeremiah A. Barondess, President of The New York Academy of Medicine, was quoted by Reuters Health in a Nov. 1 story concerning new research in The Lancet.
The study found that while occupational driving may worsen lower back pain, it does not cause lumbar disc degeneration or accelerate the development of other structural abnormalities. Dr. Barondess, who chaired the National Research Council Study on Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace that was published in 2001, said, "Although this is a nice study, there is a large and varied literature that clearly suggests that there are levels of mechanical stress, including extremes of vibration, that are capable of damaging discs."
