Two members of the Academy???s Board of Trustees, Claire Fagin and Corinne Rieder, authored an Op-Ed article in the June 10 edition of The New York Times regarding the nation???s current nursing shortage and how to address it.
Hospitals around the country are enduring full-time shortages of registered nurses as high as 19 percent, the authors report, adding that nursing shortfalls have been shown to correlate with higher patient mortality rates. While a 2002 survey showed that students are increasingly interested in nursing careers, the nation's nursing schools are having trouble accommodating them because of a lack of faculty and classroom space, combined with budget cutbacks.
