New Academy Website Offers Fresh Look, Superior Functionality

NEW YORK CITY, Jan. 21 -The Academy???s dynamic new website has been launched after undergoing a year-long reconstruction, offering visitors a portal to the most up-to-date information on issues and research about urban health.

The appealing new layout of www.nyam.org makes the site significantly more pleasing to look at, but it is the enhancements in functionality that are the most compelling improvements. A searchable database lists staff members??? publications during the presidency of Jeremiah A. Barondess, M.D., sorted by date, topic and Academy division. The Library section offers new and easy-to-follow routes into its vast resources and collections, and reliable consumer health information in English and Spanish is available through the portal to NOAH: New York Online Access to Health. A newly enabled online payment system allows consumers to register and pay for the Academy???s extensive lineup of conferences, lectures and classes over the web, and to make secure donations to the Academy via credit cards. Information about every Academy ???Initiative??????a catch-all reference to the Academy???s fifteen departments, divisions and centers???follows a consistent and clearly organized design.

The Academy began overhauling the site in January 2003 in close collaboration with independent web designer Michael Wu and many Academy staff members. The homepage has enjoyed some of the most dramatic upgrades. Instead of existing as a mostly static page, it is now continually updated with news of the latest Academy research, descriptions of upcoming events, and intriguing tidbits of medical information.

???The vision for the website was to create a platform for disseminating the new knowledge about health created by Academy research,??? said Lorraine A. LaHuta, Director of the Office of Development and Communications, which led the redesign project. ???We hope it will provide broader dissemination of the critical work of the Academy.???
