Voice of America Radio Features CUES Immunization Outreach Project

The Voice of America's "Our World" weekly science program, which is translated into 44 languages and distributed on radio stations worldwide, is now airing a fabulous four-minute feature about the Academy's "Rapid Immunization" project in disadvantaged minority communities.

"Project VIVA," run by the Center for Urban Epidemiologic Studies (CUES), has become well-known around East Harlem for its outreach workers who wear bright yellow jackets as they walk the streets. Click here (mp3, 2.5MB) to listen to the program from your computer (duration: about 4 minutes and 15 seconds).

The goal of the four-year, $3 million project (funded by the National Institutes of Health) is to devise a plan for quickly finding and immunizing groups that often fail to get vaccinated: elderly shut-ins, injection drug users, the homeless, and illegal immigrants. This will come in handy for vaccinating shadow communities against naturally occurring viruses and disease, and will also be invaluable should a sudden bioterrorist attack or epidemic occur.

The reporter interviewed three CUES staff members: Research Nurse Kay Glidden, Project VIVA Program Manager Sarah Sisco, and Outreach Worker Jose Sanchez. He also accompanied Sisco and Sanchez as they walked the streets and knocked on doors in attempt to vaccinate hard-to-reach residents.
