Discovery Channel Interviews Academy Assistant Curator

Academy Assistant Curator Arlene Shaner was interviewed on the Discovery Channel Canada???s Daily Planet program regarding George Washington???s dentures that are housed in the Academy Malloch Rare Book Room. The informative interview can be viewed online. (Scroll down to the fifth story).

Forensic scientists are utilizing the false teeth and portraits of America???s first President to build a 3-D image of him that will trace changes in his facial appearance over three points in time: ages 19, 45, and 57. Co-host Natasha Stillwell sought Arlene???s articulate expertise concerning the dentures and their creator, Dr. John Greenwood, a prominent 18th century New York dentist. The segment concludes with Arlene reading the inscription Dr. Greenwood made on the dentures in 1789 before giving them to Washington.

Launched in 2002, Daily Planet is a science magazine program that features an entertaining range of everyday science phenomenon across the world through experiments and field pieces. The Academy Rare Book Room is home to one of the nation???s premier collections on the history of medicine as well as exceptional artifacts such as Washington???s dentures.
