The Atlantic Philanthropies Awards $625,000 Contract to Academy For New Geriatric Social Work Public Policy Center

NEW YORK CITY, July 8 ??? The Atlantic Philanthropies awarded $625,000 to The New York Academy of Medicine for the development of public policy initiatives that foster and enhance health and social services for the aging, with the overarching goal of improving the care management provided for seniors. The new Geriatric Social Work Public Policy Center (GSWPPC) will build on the work of the National Leadership Coalition, a volunteer group of social work leaders that is currently convened and led by the Academy. Driving this grant is the belief that geriatric social workers can help to keep the aging process positive and productive.

The current grant covers a 15-month planning period, during which the goals are:

  • To develop a long-range policy agenda in order to equip care managers to meet the needs of a rapidly aging population

  • To design a process for coordinating and monitoring the activities of disparate, sometimes fragmented, entities that promote care coordination among older adults

  • To gather and produce the evidence necessary to solidify care coordination as an essential service for the aging population

  • To develop comprehensive, well-targeted communications about the value of care coordination by geriatric social workers

Successful Phase I strategies will lay the groundwork for Phase II, the goal of which is to lead and coordinate public policy advocacy campaigns to lower the barriers between care managers, and the aging population. The Phase II funding application will be made in mid-2006.

The Atlantic Philanthropies is an international organization whose mission is to effect lasting changes in the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people. Their efforts are concentrated in four areas: aging, disadvantaged children and youth, health of populations in developing countries, and reconciliation and human rights.

The GSWPPC will be led by Academy staff members: Patricia J. Volland, MBA, MSW, Director; Ruth Finkelstein, ScD, Co-Director; Peri Rosenfeld, PhD, Research Coordinator; and Jeannine Melly, MPH, Coordinator.
