Legendary Medical Inventor and Surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey to Lecture at Academy

NEW YORK CITY, Oct. 27--Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, an ingenious medical inventor and innovator in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, will give a Wednesday, Nov. 2 lecture at the Academy on the ???The Development of Cardiovascular Surgery: An Overview.??? After the lecture, Academy President Dr. Jeremiah A. Barondess will present Dr. DeBakey with The Seventeenth Annual Glorney-Raisbeck Lecture and Award in Cardiology.

Dr. DeBakey is a living legend who has been a trailblazer in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, having devised many operations, devices and surgical instruments. His career has been marked by selfless devotion to the service of humanity, through his life-saving inventions, his role as a gifted and dedicated teacher, and his interventions as a premier surgeon. In the course of his long and illustrious career, Dr. DeBakey has performed more than 60,000 cardiovascular procedures and has trained thousands of surgeons who practice throughout the world, many as heads of departments of surgery.

Currently the Director of the DeBakey Heart Center at the Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. DeBakey has published more than 1,600 medical articles, chapters and books. Internationally renowned medical societies and organizations have lavished him with prestigious awards and honors for his many accomplishments. Since 1948, Dr. DeBakey has held appointments at Baylor College of Medicine as Chairman of the Department of Surgery, President, and Chancellor. He currently serves as Chancellor Emeritus, Distinguished Service Professor and Olga Keith Wiess Professor of Surgery, as well as Director of the DeBakey Heart Center.

The Academy has presented the Glorney-Raisbeck award annually since 1988 to a clinician or basic scientist for outstanding contributions to the field of cardiovascular disease and is endowed by the Corlette Glorney Foundation.

The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Academy, followed by the Lecture and Award at 6:30 p.m.

The New York Academy of Medicine, the country???s premier urban health policy and intervention center, focuses on enhancing the health of people living in cities through research, education, advocacy, and prevention.

NYAM Report - Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective

The New York Academy of Medicine with support from the New York State Heath Foundation released a new report, Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective.

This report identifies opportunities that build on both the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and New York’s ongoing efforts toward improving the health of its 19 million residents.
