Academy Gala on March 14 Will Honor Edward J. Ludwig and Judith Rodin, Two Philanthropic Leaders Advancing Global Health

NEW YORK CITY, Feb. 2???The New York Academy of Medicine will recognize and celebrate two extraordinary leaders who have worked to improve health in America at its annual black-tie Gala on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at Cipriani 42nd Street.

Edward J. Ludwig, Chairman, President, and CEO of BD, a medical technology company, will be honored for his outstanding corporate and social responsibility, his commitment to transforming healthcare on a global scale, and his contribution to the advancement of public health. Judith Rodin, PhD, President of The Rockefeller Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to improving the lives of the poor, will be honored for her groundbreaking and wide-ranging accomplishments in the fields of women???s health, education, and community welfare.

Hundreds of leaders in business, finance, health, media, and government will convene at this, the Academy???s 12th Annual Gala, to pay tribute to the work and on-going public health contributions of Mr. Ludwig and Dr. Rodin. The Gala is the Academy???s major annual fundraising event, providing critical support for programs involving research, education, advocacy, policy, and prevention.

The cocktail hour will begin at 6:30 p.m., and dinner is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Award presentations will take place from 7:50 p.m. to 8:20 p.m., after which dinner will resume. Media are invited to the cocktail hour and to listen to the presentations, but will not be served dinner. Further information about the honorees is as follows:

Edward J. Ludwig: Edward J. Ludwig serves as Chairman, President and CEO of BD, a global medical technology company dedicated to enhancing the health of millions of people around the world. Mr. Ludwig leads corporate caring initiatives that provide medical relief services to underserved populations and is active in many philanthropic efforts. Among these, he serves as trustee of The Johns Hopkins University and chairs the Advisory Board for The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a member of the board of directors of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, is chairman-elect of the Advanced Medical Technology Association, and serves as a trustee of the Hackensack University Medical Center.

Judith Rodin, PhD: Judith Rodin became president of the Rockefeller Foundation in March 2005 after a distinguished career as president of the University of Pennsylvania and a pioneer in the women???s health movement. She was the first woman to serve as president of an Ivy League university and guided the University of Pennsylvania through a period of unprecedented growth that improved the quality of life on campus and in the surrounding community. Dr. Rodin???s healthcare research has contributed to our understanding of obesity, of health-promoting vs. health-damaging behaviors, and of what enhances the lives of the aging population. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, she has been elected to many prestigious organizations, has published more than 200 articles, and has authored or co-authored eleven books, including most recently, Public Discourse in America: Conversation and Community in the Twenty-First Century.

NYAM Report - Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective

The New York Academy of Medicine with support from the New York State Heath Foundation released a new report, Federal Health Care Reform in New York State: A Population Health Perspective.

This report identifies opportunities that build on both the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) and New York’s ongoing efforts toward improving the health of its 19 million residents.
