NEW YORK CITY, Feb. 6???Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, will be the keynote speaker at The New York Academy of Medicine???s 159th Annual Stated Meeting of the Fellows on May 9. Academy awards for distinguished accomplishments in biomedical science, medicine, public health, and service to the Academy will be presented to four outstanding leaders.
Mr. Annan is the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations and the recipient of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. He will speak on some global implications of disease.
The Academy Medal for Distinguished Contributions in Biomedical Science will be presented to Bert Vogelstein, MD, Clayton Professor of Oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for his work in uncovering the genetic causes of cancer.
The John Stearns Award for Lifetime Achievement in Medicine will be presented to Victor A. McKusick, MD, University Professor of Medical Genetics, Department of Medicine, and Director, Alan and Kathryn Greenberg Center for Skeletal Dysplasis, at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Institute of Genetic Medicine for his contributions to the comprehensive collation of information on human genes and genetic disorders.
The Stephen Smith Award for Lifetime Achievement in Public Health will be awarded to William B. Kannel, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine and Public Health at Boston University School of Medicine for his pioneering work in the field of cardiovascular epidemiology and preventive cardiology.
Gordon H. DeFriese, PhD, President of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine and researcher on primary care for aging and geriatric care populations will receive the Academy Plaque for Exceptional Service to the Academy.
The black tie dinner event will be held in the Academy???s historic Library at 1216 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street--cocktails at 6:00pm, dinner, discourse, and awards at 7:00pm.
